Configuring your Email Account on a Desktop or Laptop

woman-using-laptopIn most email clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.), go to Tools and then Accounts. There you will find an option to add a new account. There are many optional features available to you in email clients but only a few are required.

You will need to enter the following information in the create wizard:

  • Your name
  • Email address of the account that you wish to add
  • The password for the email account
  • For the incoming mail server (IMAP or POP3) name, use mail.acceleration.net
    • For SSL/TLS encryption (recommended), the default ports of 993 for IMAPS (encrypted IMAP) and 995 for POP3S (encrypted POP3) are available
  • For the outgoing mail server (SMTP) name, use mail.acceleration.net
    • For SSL/TLS encryption (recommended), the default ports of 465 for SSL/TLS or 587 for STARTTLS are available depending on which encryption method is available to you (some mail clients support both SSL/TLS and STARTTLS)
    • If you do not have internet connectivity through Acceleration and you are unable to send mail out using either of the default ports (port 587 for STARTTLS, or port 465 for SSL/TLS), you may attempt to send out using port 8025 (this port also supports STARTTLS).
You can generally find this option under the “More Settings”->”Advanced” tab within your email client.
If you’re unable to successfully send out mail, this modification is most likely required.
